When new open-pollinated varieties are released they can sometimes get lost in the maze of hybrids touted to growers. If these new OP varieties don't catch on, they may disappear. We trial new varieties to discover which ones deserve some serious buzz. Over the past decade, plant breeder Fred Hempel has been using classical breeding practices to create colorful and delicious new varieties he calls "Artisan Tomatoes." We adore Hempel's Bumble Bee line the striped cherries are both pretty and tasty.
Contains Purple Bumble Bee, Sunrise Bumble Bee, and Pink Bumble Bee cherry tomatoes. Grow a few plants this year and you'll find yourself buzzing like a bee to each.
Growing Instructions
Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost, then transplant outdoors to indicated spacing after all threat of frost has passed. All tomatoes benefit from staking; indeterminate varieties require it. Prune tomatoes when they reach about 24" high and are starting to produce small suckers. Keep plants from coming into contact with the soil, and water at the roots to prevent the spread of soil borne disease.

Monarch butterflies, with their strikingly streaked caterpillars, gold-foiled chrysalises, and tiger-striped wing patterns, are one of the most beloved of all butterflies. We humans flock to witness monarch migrations, but we are also responsible for their decline. Loss of habitat and exposure to pesticides threaten monarch populations from Canada to Mexico. Grow Milkweed, the monarch caterpillar's host plant, to create a monarch sanctuary in your own backyard. Create a companion planting of Butterfly Weed for very happy butterflies.
Growing Instructions
Cold stratification required: direct sow in fall or early winter into a clean, prepared bed. Or, for spring sowing, sow in deep seed-starting pots about ¼" deep, in rich, damp soil. Cover and refrigerate for 3 weeks. Afterwards, move to a 70-degree, well-lit spot for germination, which can take up to 14 days. Transplant outdoors after frost in an area that can remain a milkweed patch for years.
Please note: Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is native to much of the eastern and mid continental U.S.—most areas east of the Rocky Mountains. If you live outside of these areas, please do not buy or plant Asclepias syriaca. Before planting any milkweed, it's always a wise idea to reference monarchwatch.orgor the Xerces Society for more information on milkweed species that are native to your specific area.

Some garden for food, others for beauty. But for many centuries, apothecary gardens were one of the most common plots to be found around the home. The perfect herb for making topical ointments for gardeners' achy hands and sore backs, Meadow Arnica is a medicinally interchangeable substitute for Mountain Arnica, which only grows well at high altitudes. Plant this wide-spreading perennial to enjoy the dense green foliage, yellow flowers, and the soothing effect it has on achy muscles. Please note that Meadow Arnica is naturally an erratic germinator; oversow and expect only the minority of seeds to germinate in a timely manner.
Growing Instructions
Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before planting date. Sprinkle a few seeds on the soil surface, agitate and water in gently. Keep soil moist but not wet. Seed can take up to 3 weeks to germinate. The ideal temperature for germination is 55 degrees. Transplant when soil has warmed, in mid- to late spring. Arnica thrives in well drained, poor soil; no need for amendments. Harvest flowers when they appear and dry to use medicinally.

This salad mix is anything but virtual. USB (Ultimate Salad Bowl) won't plug into any port on your laptop, but it will burst with flavor when you upload your harvest into a big salad bowl. It will also assist in one of the greatest challenges of our era: unplugging ourselves from technology. Let this bright and tasty mix of greens beckon you to your garden; it will fill you more fully than any electronic feed.
Best eaten raw as young leaves; most are cut-and-come-again types. Colors range from light greens to dark reds, from speckles to stripes. Consider planting USB at your garden's edge to create a decorative and edible border.
Growing Instructions
Direct sow from 4 weeks before last spring frost until 2 weeks before first fall frost at 3-week intervals. Thin by harvesting (and eating!) half of the young plants, leaving half to mature further for additional harvests. Harvest promptly to avoid stressing plants through overcrowding. For salad cuttings, cut when 3" high, about 3 weeks after seeding. Harvest the leaves only, leaving growing tip to regrow. Repeat 2 times. To create a decorative border for your garden, we recommend mixing USB seeds with sand in a 1:1 ratio and drizzling the mix along a shallow trough around your garden.

A lovely biennial digitalis mix in complementary shades of purple, pink, and white. If planted early, some plants will bloom the first year; the full mix should reveal itself the following year. Self sows readily if happy. Reaches heights of 2-3'. Will tolerate partial shade. Note that Foxglove is poisonous if ingested.
Growing Instructions
Start indoors 10-12 weeks before last frost, sowing the seeds on the surface of the soil as light aids in germination. Mist or bottom water until germination. Harden off and transplant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Benefits from starting in a biodegradable pot, as its roots can be sensitive to disturbance during transplant.

Blistered Shishitos are the pinnacle of appetizers. Flash-fried in a pan and served with dipping sauce, they are now a popular starter on tables across America. But their roots are in Japan, where they were popular long before reaching Western plates and palates. the name "Shishito" means "Lion Pepper." Fiercely flavored with a stable temperament, Shishitos are indeed lion-like. Even the plants look a bit feline, with their heavy harvests of green peppers hanging shaggy and full like giant manes.
If you've ever had a plate of green shishitos, prepared to perfection, salty and perfectly spicy and softened by a brief sauté, you've undoubtedly thought about growing your own. And why not? Finding the peppers in stores is difficult; growing your own is straightforward, inexpensive, and allows you to binge each summer on a very special treat.
Growing Instructions
Start indoors 8-10 weeks before last frost in very warm spot (80 degrees is ideal). Keep seedlings in a well-ventilated area at 70+ degrees and do not over water. Transplant outdoors into rich soil after threat of frost has passed. Harvest peppers before they start to turn red.

Long, ribbed, striped cucumber-like fruits are tender, have an excellent mild flavor, and are free from bitterness that can beset regular cukes (these are technically melons). Untrellised, the fruits will curve into an S shape (hence the name). Fruits best harvested when 7-16" long.
With roots in Egypt and the Middle East, varieties of this delicious melon were domesticated and selected in Armenia as far back as the 15th century. The seeds traveled with Armenian immigrants to the United States in the late 1800s, and became a treasured symbol of home.
Growing Instructions
Easy to grow. Direct sow a week or two after last frost; or, sow under protection three weeks before last frost. Transplant in hills of 3-4 seeds spaced 2-3' apart or in rows 18" apart. Will grow up a trellis; untrellised,
the fruits will curve into an S shape. Keep harvesting for continued production; best when 7-16" long.

Although the stems are tall, these uniquely ruffled flowers can be seen up close with the bare eye, no telescope required. A patch creates its own earthbound universe of glowing pink pulsar planets, nebulas of gathering bees, orbiting hummingbirds, and interstellar butterflies coming in for a landing. The big, rose-hued, mostly doubled blooms on tall stems will make you want to reach out and give them a little pat-pat: they are a flower worth double clicking!
A favorite among cut flower growers, Double Click is a stunningly beautiful cosmos variety that adds an elegant yet whimsical element to bouquets. This selection is a range of pink blooms, from light pink to cranberry. The form of the blooms is a mix of fully double and semi-double, with a smattering of singles, and some plants that produce flowers that closely resemble Seashells Cosmos very easy to grow. Photo courtesy of Denise Pranger of Essential Blooms.
Growing Instructions
Can be direct seeded or transplanted. Plant close for cut flower production, or farther apart for the ornamental garden. Quick days to maturity mean you can sow this variety in succession for abundant and elegant blooms all season. Direct sow after first, or start indoors 4-6 weeks prior. Snip the main stem when plants are 6-12" high to encourage branching. Once flowering, cut often and deep to encourage more blooms. Foliage can be used as a ferny filler. Blooms last 5-7 days in a vase.

During the Dutch Golden Age, the art of plant breeding and painting flourished like a field of flowers in bloom. Artists, agriculturalists, and horticulturalists alike found ways to celebrate the beauty and diversity of flowers. Painters, like Rembrandt van Rijn, captured this obsession with plants by representing everyday farmers, riotous flower bouquets, sweeping Dutch landscapes, farmer's market scenes, and the flurry of ships coming in and out of ports carrying goods, including flower seeds.
A long-lasting and hardy flower for bouquets. These snaps are vibrantly and masterfully colored with bright rosy-orange upper petals and yellow-streaked with orange on their lower petals. Plants produce gallery-worthy blossoms deep into the fall, and are also great for cutting for bouquets.
Growing Instructions
Sow 3-5 seeds per pot, gently pressing them into the soil to keep them from washing away. Once seedlings have sprouted, thin out the weakest, leaving 1 per pot. Transplant outdoors in fertile, well-drained soil. A long-lasting flower for bouquets. Semi-hardy plants will continue to grow and bloom beyond the first fall frost.

The watering can is produced to last for many years. It is made of thicker iron sheets than usual, stronger welds and a rough finish.
When the watering cans are finished, they are hot galvanized. They are immersed in a zinc alloy that is 460 degrees hot. The zinc adheres to the iron as a thick syrup. When the jug comes up again, it hangs and drips for 20 minutes. This is the absolute best way to prevent the iron from rusting.
The jugs that do not get paint, the ones keeping the zinc color, start a slow oxidation process. That is, the zinc slowly matures in color. If you want this process to go faster, you can apply a weak acid, for example a sour milk product. It will accelerate the oxidation which gives the matte surface. The hot dip galvanizing loses its full correction security after about 50 years.
Since the watering can is made of hot-dip galvanized metal, you can leave it with water in it if you don't use it all.
The watering can is both for outdoor and indoor use, does not tolerate frost if there is water in it.

Our era is twitchy: our senses are hammered by ringtones, vibrations, alarms, and sirens. The resulting society-wide anxiety is the affliction of our time. Need relief? Try some little apples. This is the name given by the ancient Greeks to the spherical, golden, highly aromatic centers of chamomile blossoms. The ancients realized these morsels had healing properties and used them to treat fever, improve mood, and induce relaxation, in addition to using them in beer-making. In your own garden, you can experience these qualities simply by walking through a patch of chamomile in full bloom: its aroma is both heady and soothing, its profusion of tiny blooms a visual delight.
Growing Instructions
Sow outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked. Plants grow quickly and reach 2' high. Harvest the flower heads before they fade. Dry by hanging in a dry place; store the dry flowers to enjoy a calming tea year round. You can also make tea from the fresh flowers. Self sows.

Gnomes have a long and distinguished history as tough garden helpers. Diminutive clay garden gnomes originated in Germany in the 1800s. There they remain beloved protectors of the home garden, cherished for their ability to ward off danger. Thyme, too, is a botanical defender: it was long believed to be an antidote for poison and a preventer of plague. But thyme is associated with courage most of all, as depicted by our thyme-wielding gnome bravely fighting off an intruding squirrel.
Growing Instructions
Start thyme indoors 8 weeks before last frost by seeding clusters of 5-10 seeds together on top of the soil, pressing them in and watering them in lightly. Keep moist, but not wet. Transplant outdoors when seedlings are 3" high, spaced at least 6" apart (thyme does not mind some crowding). Harvest the upper green growth and prune back flowering stalks to promote more green growth.

Sweet peas were discovered by a Sicilian gardener in the late 1600s; he followed his nose, and their fragrance beckoned. By the early 20th Century, they were one of the most sought-after flowers for English gardeners. Breeding these flowers for color, size, ruffle, and adaptation to different climates became the rage. But something happened along the way their fragrance faded. Let the heady perfume of this mix return you to the days when sweet peas weren't just for show but were also for smell!
Sweet peas are not the same as edible garden peas, in fact, they are toxic. Do not consume.
Growing Instructions
Sow seeds outdoors early, as soon as the soil can be worked. Sweet peas only thrive in cool months, don't delay when planting them. Prepare garden bed with plenty of compost or manure. Provide sweet peas with good support, they will grow as high as 6' if given proper support, water and fertility. Harvest flowers often to encourage more blooms. If given a good start, sweet peas will keep blooming into the summer months.

When we think of eating from the garden, we tend to think of fruits, roots, greens, and herbs. But flowers are nature's most intricate candies. With a range of flavors from sweet to spicy, flowers not only add bright and elegant beauty to any dish but can impart culinary and nutritional diversity as well. Always gorgeous fresh in a salad, some blooms can also be candied or cooked. If you are what you eat, then why not become a beautiful flower?
Growing Instructions
Direct sow from mid-April until early August in loose, fertile, deeply-worked soil. Choose your least-weedy soil for carrots, as they are tricky to cultivate when young; carrots can take 10 days to germinate, and can be quickly choked by weeds. Thin young carrot seedlings to 2" apart, then thin baby carrots by pulling out every other carrot, allowing the remaining carrots to grow to full size. While good carrots can be grown in any soil, they only grow to supermarket size in loose and deep soils without too many rocks. Fall carrots can be stored in plastic bags in the refrigerator or in a root cellar for months. Do not store fresh carrots with the tops on; they draw water and nutrients from the roots. Rather, remove the tops after harvesting and use to flavor soup stock.

Keeping butterfly populations happy and robust is a team effort, one that cannot be achieved by plantings of Common Milkweed alone. Although related, Butterfly Weed is a different species, with a wider native range and a habit and growth schedule that is all its own. It tends to flower for a longer duration of time than Common Milkweed, and it lacks milky sap. The nectar within its blooms attracts butterflies of all types, and the larvae of monarchs feed on the leaves. Long live the lepidoptera!
Growing Instructions
For spring plants, cold-stratify seeds by sowing directly into soil from fall through winter. Or, sow 8-10 weeks before last frost in deep seed-starting pots about ¼" deep, in rich, damp soil. Cover and refrigerate for 3-4 weeks. After refrigeration, move to a 70-degree, well-lit spot for germination, which usually occurs in 14-21 days. Transplant outdoors after frost in an area where plants can naturalize and live for years. Perennial (plants may bloom late in the first year, or not until the second year).
