https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs.atom eastlankaa - THE JOURNAL 2024-05-04T20:20:50-07:00 eastlankaa https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/a-delicious-simple-sweet-and-savory-salad 2024-05-04T20:20:50-07:00 2024-05-04T20:20:50-07:00 A Delicious Simple, Sweet And Savory Salad Caroline Diani I’ve been watching the peach blossom turn from buds, to floral blooms and now the wait for the peaches to grow begins. In anticipation of the harvest that we’ll hopefully have, I’ve been leafing through some cookbooks to start experimenting with some recipes that are centered around this sweet treat. I found a really colorful and simple salad in our new book from Erin French of The Lost Kitchen fame and, in lieu of fresh peaches that aren’t available yet, grabbed a can to try a practice run…

There are times when I don’t feel like a salad because I’m extra hungry and assume that it just won’t hit the spot. But, not this one - it has bread in it! Erin calls it her Peach And Blackberry Bread Salad and it’s easy, delicious, and filling. She says you can add it to a bed of arugula and top it with a scoop of goats cheese, but I started simple with just the salad and it was perfect.

To make the vinaigrette, you add rice wine vinegar and finely chopped shallots. I didn’t have rice wine vinegar so I subbed in our Barrel Aged Maple Syrup Vinegar. While you leave the shallots to marinate in the vinegar, toast one inch chunks of about a third of a French baguette in olive oil until golden brown. Toss with Maldon salt and set aside.

Since we don’t have any seasonal peaches in our garden or grocery store yet, I bought two cans of peaches and drained out the syrup. Add to a large bowl along with a sliced English cucumber cut into half moons and the toasted croutons. Stir in the vinaigrette and let sit for at least ten minutes to marinate.

Add a cup of basil leaves, blackberries, tarragon leaves and gently torn mint leaves. Garnish with edible flowers such as pansies, marigolds or nasturtium.

It’s crunchy, juicy, sweet and savory and the bread is the perfect kicker.. plump from the marinating and crunchy from the toasting. Pour yourself a glass of rosé and enjoy! For the full recipe and other delicious dishes (I’m working my way through), check out Big Heart, Little Stove here.

Wishing you all a very happy May!

Sending lots of love,

Before it slips into summer, I want to take a moment to enjoy the beauty that I'm seeing around me and share it here to remember before it's past...

During April, the colors that dominate are pinks, creams, yellow, green and coral red. Gardens bloom with pear and peach blossom, daffodils, bleeding hearts, magnolia, and fritillary. And the greens of grass and leaves are vibrant after spring showers. Synchronizing with nature, the new arrivals at eastlankaa give a nod to the beauty of nature and the transition from the cold to the crisp spring air, and seasonal hues. Some of my favorite looks that mirror this color palette include bright, vibrant, and easy dresses, fun, striped pants, creamy skirts, and earthy and textural, lightweight jackets.

I've created a collection with some of my favorites from each store for your wardrobe and home based on the seasonal inspiration around me. I'm so happy to be able to work from the farm and experience this magical time. The link to the collection is in the Shop The Story box below.

Sending lots of love,

With three weeks to countdown, I thought I'd share some favorites we've been rounding up for mothers, grandmothers, mothers-to-be, dog mamas, and anyone who's a mother figure in you life...

We have dozens of suggestions for making the mamas feel loved, and I thought of what my mama would have loved, so highlighting my top nine here.

Who doesn’t love a candle, and when you’re looking for the best of the best, Trudon candles offer the prestige of being founded in 1643. The Josephine fragrance is a great choice for those who like a light floral - head notes of bergamot, kaffir lime and spice, heart notes of camellia, Egyptian jasmine, Turkish rose and base notes of iris, white musks and Indonesian sandalwood. For an extra special gift, the By Pariah stackable ring set is exquisite. Made with three bands - a 14K band, a diamond band and a black onyx band with 14K gold. Wear them together or individually depending on the mood. For a sentimental keepsake, Mom’s Story is a beautiful notebook to record special memories, stories and advice that you want to pass down to your children and grandchildren.

Help her pamper herself with our bestselling pomegranate hand cream by Irene Forte. Each of her products are created with ingredients grown on the organic farm at Verdura Resort in Sicily. The essence of Mediterranean wellness is diffused into every bottle. The Heron robes have been part of our store offering for many years now and for good reason - We keep selling out. They’re soft, feminine, flattering and the heron print is beautiful. And being one size, you can’t go wrong. For those who love handmade one-of-a-kind, these petite wine cups are a great choice. Made by Lucrecia in Santa Fe New Mexico, the cups are painted by hand and are intended to be loved, used and to spark joy.

Grandma’s Story is another keepsake book for Grandmas to record their most special memories, share words of wisdom and more to hand down to their grandchildren. The petite pearl cuff made with a baroque pearl on a hammered gold-filled wire made by Mary Macgill in Upstate New York. Pajamas that pack a big style punch, the Olivia Von Halle striped silk pjs are a special gift that are chic enough to wear outside the bedroom and come in a luxurious box.

The job of being a mother never stops and whether your mothers are living or passed on, their love never fades. The mark they leave goes deep and I have immeasurable admiration for mothers and all that they do. You’re incredible!

Sending lots of love to all you mamas out there,

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/the-april-edit 2024-04-13T21:18:56-07:00 2024-04-14T06:09:38-07:00 The April Edit Caroline Diani Spring is officially here, and with the blooms in all their glory, refreshing my favorite spaces both inside and out at home has been a welcome focus this week. Now that I’m back from my Scotland trip and embracing this new season, I thought I’d share what I’m loving for a coffee table refresh, essentials for time outdoors, and easy additions to start your spring wardrobe…

My coffee table holds books and items that are a source of inspiration and I frequently change and freshen this area in my home to reflect the season or what I’m currently interested in. The balloon vase is my go-to for foliage and flowers, and for spring I’ve loaded it up with long blossom branches. For a new fragrance, Trudon has just launched the Versailles candle with notes of peony, thyme blossom, tuberose and blue iris. The brass candle base is an elegant accessory for any candle, whether in a glass or a plain pillar, and the rose botanical design matches are a pretty and functional essential. Pair with the elegant ceramic match striker to hold the matches. The newest inspirational books that I’m loving are Icons, with over 150 celebrities captured by photographer, Oscar Abolafia. Published to celebrate 75 years of the world’s greatest couture house, Dior, New Looks covers Christian Dior’s classics through the generations and designers who have taken the design mantle from the original master. This book is a gem! Another goodie, Dogs captured by Tim Flach is a tribute to dogs of all shapes and sizes and why they truly are a man’s best friend. Crystals attract the light and a coffee table is a great place to show all sides to them. This Himalayan quartz is one of my current favorites.

With the flurry of activity outside with the new blooms, flowers, smells and longer days, I’m starting to think of picnics and lounging under the sun. For an all-in-one picnic hamper that’s sleek and stylish, we've found the perfect one! It’s durable with handles and includes cutlery, cups, plates, bottle opener and even a cutting board. You just have to add your drinks and food. A cozy place to lay outside is essential and I love the bedrolls I designed with Tensira. This Greenwich stripe comes with a removable cover for easy cleaning and is filled with a cushy cotton filler. Add this Moroccan blanket to beat the chill and this cushion to lay your head on and stargaze. For a little light as the sun goes down, our bestselling cordless lights are perfect and easy to pack. If your picnic takes you to where the wildflowers are, pack our flower press book and pruning shears so you can press your clippings and savor the gifts spring has to offer. And don’t forget a sun hat and sunglasses.

I feel like whether I’ve been in NY, Wien or Europe, it’s been a long, wet winter season and I’m ready to change out the clothes I’ve had on rotation for brighter and lighter layers. Nothing says spring like yellow and the Imogen jumper is my new favorite for everyday. Wear with the Leah cargo pants and the Alex sneakers. For a great layering cardigan, the surfer in a beautiful coral red is a stunning forever wardrobe piece. For those in-between days when wind or showers are on the horizon, the cap sleeve jacket is a great layer in a flattering rose pink. For celebrations, this feminine and versatile dress can take you from a garden party to a wedding. Add these stunning 14k pebble earrings made with moss agate by one of my favorite new jewelry designers, By Pariah. For a simple and functional everyday tote for runs to the market, gym or lunch, I’m loving the panier raffia tote. And I’m sure you’ve seen that Mary Jane flats are on our essentials list here at eastlankaa, and these sweet tan suede beauties are flying out the door. Or for a true ballet flat, these Luna slippers are a great option.

I love creating these edits and hope they're helpful tools for seeing a snapshot of some of my favorites for the month or season. I'm writing from our farm in NY and each day there is more and more blossoming in the garden, the grass is getting greener and the wildlife is emerging from hibernation. I couldn't love this time of year more and welcoming it in with changes in my wardrobe and around the house is a fun part of the transition. Wherever this finds you, I hope you are enjoying this time too.

Sending lots of love,

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/carolines-guide-to-the-scottish-highlands 2024-04-06T20:15:06-07:00 2024-04-09T09:31:43-07:00 Caroline's Guide To The Scottish Highlands Caroline Diani Although I grew up close to the Scottish border in Northumberland, my trips away always took me South or overseas. I didn’t really start exploring Scotland until a few years ago and got the taste of how special of a place it is. My school friend, Gail went to university in Edinburgh, and has spent a lot of time exploring parts of Scotland, so I was more than excited for her to show Jeffrey and me some of her favorite spots. I thought I’d put together a guide of where we stayed, ate and explored in the breathtaking Highlands of Scotland…

Banchory is a burgh or town in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is about 18 miles west of Aberdeen, near where the Feugh River meets the River Dee. Glen Dye is a 15,000 acre private estate with cabins and cottages sitting at its centre, surrounded by wilderness, forest and moorland on the banks of the River Dye. Gail has worked on creative projects over the years with owners, Charlie and Caroline Gladstone, and has raved about her visits here. So, we were especially excited that she brought us.

We stayed in The Hay Loft, a small two bedroom house which was a hay loft once upon a time with the central feature now being a picture window which hay used to pass through to feed the cattle on the property. We cooked our own food each night and morning, enjoyed the wood fire in the living room and our own private wood fired hot tub outside at night. Their sweet little provisions shop on property offers eggs from their resident hens, and a carefully curated selection of staples like bread, jams, local meat, fish and homemade ready meals.

The Glen Dye Arms is a pub just down a short path from The Hay Loft and is as cozy as pubs in the country come. It's small and intimate with a roaring log fire, ancient bar and record player and is a BYOB concept which guarantees you will drink exactly what you want in the way you like to drink it!

There are many hikes to take right from your door at Glen Dye all with spectacular views. We took a 2.5 hour hike up to Clachnaben summit. It was a little challenging in the snow and wind but well worth the effort.

According to Wikipedia... Balmoral Estate is within the Cairngorms National Park and is partly within the Deeside and Lochnagar. The 50,000-acre estate contains a wide variety of landscapes, from the Dee river valley to open mountains. The estate was leased by Sir Robert Gordon, but when he died in 1847, Balmoral reverted to Lord Aberdeen. In February 1848 an arrangement was made that Prince Albert would acquire the remaining part of the lease on Balmoral, together with its furniture and staff.

After Victoria's death, the royal family continued to use Balmoral during annual visits. Queen Elizabeth II had been at the castle since July 2022 for her annual summer holiday and died on 8 September 2022 at the age of 96. The Queen's coffin lay in repose in the ballroom of the castle for three days, to allow the Royal Family, estate staff and neighbours to pay their respects. On 11 September, the coffin was transported to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh for the start of the state funeral proceedings.

Located in the neighboring village of Ballater, Fish Shop restaurant has been created for those who enjoy freshly caught, ethically sourced seafood from Scotland and the British Isles. The food is incredible here and I highly recommend the MacDuff brown crab crumpet appetizer, the roasted scallops and the 70% Island dark chocolate ice cream with Blackthorn sea salt.

Built in the 19th century, The Fife Arms Hotel is a Braemar historical landmark. Its size is evidence of the popularity of Braemar in the wake of Queen Victoria’s visits and her purchase of Balmoral, just 15 minutes from the hotel.

Inside, Bertie’s Whisky Bar, is a sumptuously elegant and glamorous whisky bar, named in honor of Queen Victoria’s eldest son, King Edward VII, also known as ‘Bertie’. There are over 390 whiskies, arranged by flavor profile: Fragrant, Fruity, Rich and Smoky. I highly recommend booking a whiskey tasting to learn more about the art of whiskey making, enjoying and aquiring.

It was said that if you were looking for someone in Braemar, the first place you should look was the public bar at The Fife Arms. The Flying Stag public bar continues to be the social centre of the village. With regulars rubbing shoulders with visitors, the bar has a vibrant atmosphere with animated conversation and live entertainment. The bar offers local beers, Scottish whiskies and spirits accompanied by a menu of hearty Scottish dishes and warm hospitality.

Glas-allt-Shiel is a lodge on the Balmoral Estate by the shore of Loch Muick. In its present form it was built in 1868 by Queen Victoria, who called it Glassalt. Following the death of her husband, Albert in 1861, she nicknamed the place, "widow's house" and lived there for several months to mourn and reflect surrounded by the extraordinary views of the Loch and hillsides. It is now an historical landmark, owned personally by King Charles III. The house is visible from the other side of the Loch and you're able to walk all the way around to get up close.

Part of my trip included spending time with close friends to have a belated celebration dinner for my 50th (which was in January). There’s nothing like quality time, even if it was brief, with those who’ve known me the longest. And for anyone who loves Indian food, Trishna is exceptional. They’re located in the Marylbone area of London and have a sister restaurant, Gymkhana.

I hope I was able to do Scotland's Highlands justice here, but there's nothing like seeing it and experiencing it in person. Scotland leaves a mark on your soul, that's for sure. I'm already looking forward to my next trip back. Special thanks to Gail for showing us such magical places, and to all my friends who made my dinner in London so fun. 50 has been very good to me so far!

Sending lots of love,

I said for my 50th I wanted to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, which, I guess didn't happen. But this is a close second and I'll share more on this beautiful place when I'm back. In the meantime, here we are at the top of blustery and snowy Clachnaben...

We've had snow, sleet, rain, wind, and sunshine, all of which have added to an authentic Highlands experience. There has been so much beauty and camaraderie, and I can't wait to share more with you in a future post.

From the whole team at eastlankaa, we wish you and your loved ones a very Happy Easter. Sending lots of love,

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/signs-of-spring-at-the-farm 2024-03-23T17:52:29-07:00 2024-03-23T17:52:29-07:00 Signs Of Spring At The Farm Caroline Diani I'm not usually at the farm during March so it's been a special treat to see the beginnings of new life around the garden. The daffodils are almost blooming and there are buds on our fruit trees and hydrangea. While it was sad to see the snowdrops die off, there is much to look forward to here...

The fruit trees, magnolia and hydrangea buds are still pretty tight, but while we wait for those to open the daffodils are days away from being in full bloom and we have crocus scattered around the garden under the locust trees, Siberian squill and periwinkle along the paths and walls. The chipmunks and squirrels have woken up and are darting around looking for food and the migratory birds have been heading back for the season.

Our resident barn vultures have been making an appearance too and will most likely be hatching more babies soon.

I don't remember seeing this plant before, but the yellow flowering ground cover is called Winter Aconite.

By late April, our magnolia trees and bushes should be blooming. And in May, the lilac bushes will follow.

While I have been taking these photos all week, it's a reminder how quickly nature moves along. Nothing is permanent, and as I write this, more plants are poking up through the soil. I've cut the end of the snowdrops and have them pressing in our flower press book. I love this time of year! I hope wherever this finds you, you're enjoying the delights of spring.

Sending lots of love,

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/the-march-edit 2024-03-16T19:45:00-07:00 2024-03-16T19:45:00-07:00 The March Edit Caroline Diani With just two weeks left until Easter, and all the traditions that follow, I thought I'd share what we've been putting together for our customers who are looking for gift baskets, host gifts, and festive details for gatherings at home...

Whether you're staying home or going to a gathering on Easter Sunday, it feels like a tradition to wear a dress. Not only is it a holiday but also a kick off to spring, so I've rounded up some favorite dresses that give a nod to the occasion. Take the Cristina floral maxi dress out for a spin with the new Aquazurra twist wedge or the Jackie mid heel and the raffia, leather combo baguette bag. For a solid color pop, I really love the new short sleeve Bianca dress in green which is perfect for all body types. Pair with the elegant purist pumps in multi color woven raffia. A versatile dress with the option to wear the sleeves off the shoulders or on, the Volga dress is a perfect day-to-night maxi. And if you're looking for a more casual dress, I'm loving the Godralia dress accessorized with the Panier raffia tote.

Who doesn't love chocolate at Easter?! And we have a great selection to pick from for all kinds of palettes. For the ultimate gift, this egg box filled with artisanal hand painted dark and milk chocolate with assorted ganache fillings are both pretty and decadent. For a botanical chocolate, the Nature Lover bar is made with milk chocolate, hazelnut praline, dates and bee pollen. If truffles are your thing, this beautiful bon bon box has six assorted chocolates topped with edible flowers. For a pampering and fragrant gift, the egg shaped bath bombs smell of fresh lemongrass and calendula. Or if, like us, you're die-hard Trudon candle fans, my current favorite is the 380th anniversary Tuilleries candle -- that's right... 380th -- an homage to the classic rose. And you can't think of Easter without bunnies, so we couldn't resist the bunny statue which makes a great table setting topper or ornament anywhere around the home. And add a festive touch to your kitchen with this cotton flour sack bunny tea towel

After the dark hues of a winter tabletop, it's a welcome change to lighten things up. Our Stone Jug misty rose napkins are a pretty Easter-themed pastel shade. Pair with our bestselling cane napkin rings. Make your feast even prettier with this cake stand and dome and French baguette board made from upcycled spalted maple. To cut your cake in style, this vintage serrated knife is a beautiful server to add to your table. Set the mood with a pair of rope twist candles held in these vintage brass candlesticks. For an elevated table, the Stone Jug linen tablecloth is my go-to, and for a textural detail to layer on top, these fringe placemats are a beautiful touch.

With two weeks left until the holiday weekend, there's still time for your online orders to arrive in time, and, as always, if you need help with anything, you can email me at [email protected]

Welcome to spring, friends.

Sending lots of love,

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/a-weekend-in-paris 2024-03-09T19:15:49-08:00 2024-03-09T19:15:49-08:00 A Weekend In Paris Caroline Diani Last weekend was Paris Fashion Week and I headed over to look at the fall collections and make selections for our stores. What adds to the excitement of seeing what’s new is how it’s merchandised in the showrooms, what the Parisian ladies are wearing, where they’re eating and what art galleries they’re visiting. So for this week’s post, I thought I’d share some of what I saw and ate in Paris…

My trips to Paris are always centered around visits to showrooms to see collections from new and existing designers that we carry at eastlankaa, or are looking to bring in. There is no better backdrop for fashion than the historic buildings and epic views of the city. I think I'm my most creative when I'm here and, I've been coming here since I was young, so it feel like home away from home.

Bistrot des Tournelles is a retro stye French bistro located in the Marais district of Paris between Places des Vosges and Place de la Bastille. Traditional plates are prepared by Geoffroy Lalangella, the son of Neapolitan butchers who trained at the École Ferrandi. You can expect anything from a perfectly cooked sirloin steak and fries to eggplant millefeuille sprinkled with basil. They serve a selection of beautiful natural wines with a focus on the Beaujolais region. This place is a little gem to add to your list.

When I was here last October, the Mark Rothko exhibit hadn't quite opened yet, so I have been patiently waiting to visit this time around. Covering three floors in the Louis Vuitton Fondation space, designed by Frank Gehry, it covers Rothko's journey from his birthplace in Latvia, to his immigration to the US, and his life as an abstract expressionist artist. Though he rejected the notion that he was a colorist, it's hard to escape, when looking at his paintings, that they are a master class in poetry of color. This is a must-see exhibit.

I always try to visit Le Bon Marché, and though it's famous for the curation of designers, it's as much about their food hall which is over-the-top amazing! It has everything, and everything is on another level of great. I could write a whole post about this market, but I'll spare you and just drop these photos of a tiny part of their cheese department. Located on Rue de Sèvres in the Saint Germain des Prés district.

L'avant Comptoir du Marché is a wine bar located in the 6th arrondissement with charcuterie platters, small plates and the absolute best bread and butter served gratis with wine. The ambiance is casual and the staff help you select the perfect wine for your palette with unlimited tastings. This place is a must, every time I'm here and looking for something non-fussy and authentic. And, one of these days, I'm going to make them tell me how they make their butter taste so damn good.

Big Love is a vegetarian restaurant offering French toast and pancakes for brunch and tasty pizza and pasta for dinner with the freshest of ingredients. The decor is part pantry, part intimate family style kitchen. Their pizzas are probably the best I've ever had, and I highly recommend their chocolate torte dessert which is served on a plate of cream. Located in the Marais district.

Though it rained most days while I was here, there really is no bad day with all that this city offers. It's a feast for the eyes and a tonic for the soul. If you have some favorite spots in Paris, would love to hear about them. Drop a line in the comment section below.

Sending lots of love,

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/the-spring-table 2024-03-02T17:45:26-08:00 2024-03-02T17:45:26-08:00 The Spring Table Caroline Diani We had an exciting week at our home store with the delivery of an antique farmhouse table and benches that I found in Upstate NY recently. I fell in love with the old oak wood, the beautiful legs and the history - 19th century French origin. I can’t help but wonder about the meals and stories shared around that table over the last couple of centuries. So, in celebration of our new addition, we set the table for spring and I thought I’d share it with you here…

I think there is a universal love for gathering around a table with those close to you and feasting on good food. Those experiences are generated from the energy of community, the smells and tastes of the dishes served, and the atmosphere we create with our table settings. It all comes together in a melting pot of a moment, set in a lasting place in our heart and mind. And so, I always strive to make what’s placed on the table a really thoughtful and intentional experience. With this beautiful old table, there was no need for a tablecloth, just textural fringe placemats and layers of handmade white plates and dishes. With spring right around the corner, the fresh stripes of our linen Stone Jug napkins feel right. And fresh greenery is a welcome addition after winter. The centerpiece topiaries are the perfect shape to still be able to interact with people across from you and can be staggered with low moss pots. Both are tricky to ship, so available for in store purchase only.

I like my glassware to be a mash up of shapes, styles and texture with wine and water glasses like these. And decanting wine or water is always an elegant detail. These are a few of my favorites here, here and here. And scents help set a tone, and the Trudon Cyrnos fragrance with notes of lemon, myrtle, thyme and lavender is fresh and of-the-season. It also comes in a large three wick size which is great for setting on a sideboard or coffee table and letting the aroma fill the room.

With only four weeks left until Easter, our little bunny statues make sweet, whimsical place settings along with the decorative wood eggs.

For a soft landing for your tush, our felted fleece rugs draped over the vintage benches (sold separately from the table) are perfect. For those of you who aren’t familiar with our rugs, they’re made by an incredible shepherdess in Northern England, who cares for her sheep as if they were part of the family. She sheers them each spring and felts their wool only, so that the sheep continue to have a happy life at her farm and produce a new wooly coat to sheer the next year. She has over 70 sheep, each with names and characters and her rugs have become collectors items with many of our customers.

I’m writing this from Paris where it’s Fashion Week and I’m buying for the stores. Although it’s been rainy, it’s mild and the daffodils and blossoms are blooming. We made it through winter, friends. Can you feel and see those subtle shifts?

Sending lots of love,

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/some-favorite-food-spots-in-nyc 2024-02-24T21:17:16-08:00 2024-02-25T08:04:08-08:00 Some Favorite Food Spots In NYC Caroline Diani As we all know, New York City is constantly changing and in flux. It’s a part of the magic energy that it has to offer, and every trip here never disappoints. I’ve noticed that the joy of eating out has returned and I've been trying new-to-me spots as well as old favorites again. While I'm here buying, the days are long and the one thing I'm constantly dreaming about is what I'm going to eat for dinner. So, I thought I'd share some of my favorites with you incase you need any to add to your list!

How I mix business with pleasure in the city is by making dinner an adventure. I like trying new places, wherever they are in the city, and love walking at night when the bustle of people leaving work is electric. Sometimes the walk will be a mile or more to get to a restaurant, so the reward of sitting down to relax and feast is extra special. Here is a roundup of where I’ve been to eat on this buying trip…

Eat Offbeat at Atelier Jolie

I had been excited to visit Angelina Jolie’s store ever since I heard she took over the late Jean-Michel Basquiat’s home and art studio. The space showcases her clothing label along with artist in residence, Simon Ungless who worked under Alexander McQueen. At the back of the space is a hidden gem of a cafe that’s part of the Eat Offbeat concept which hires refugees and helps jumpstart their careers. They currently serve Turkish coffee and Moroccan tea along with baked foods made daily by a rotation of chefs from Syria, Sri Lanka, Senegal and Venezuela. I highly recommend the walnut baklava and cashew kunafa cup. And, bonus, the Syrian lady who helped me was the chef who made them. Located on Great Jones Street in the Bowery.

Friend Of A Farmer

Located next-door to Bedford Cheese Shop, this area has become a favorite of ours to come to and do a few things at once. Friend Of A Farmer has been at the forefront of farm-to-table for many years and created an atmosphere that feels like you’re sitting in a cozy European cottage. We like to come for brunch and you can’t go wrong with waffles, pancakes or omelettes. They’re all delicious. Located on Irving Plaza in Gramercy Park.

The Guild Bar

This bar is tucked inside the home store RW Guild, and has an elegant and intimate feel with only five bar stools and your pick of any one-of-a-kind glasses that suits your fancy to drink your signature cocktail from. And, conveniently, all of the glasses are available to purchase, too. Since it’s such a small bar, the bartender is part of your experience and happy to go along with any conversation you feel like having, whilst talking you through some of his creations, like, The Protagonist, Persistence Of Memory, and The Fool You Need, to name a few. Located on Howard Street in Soho.

GupShup

I’m a huge fan of Indian food but have struggled to find good places in the city - until now. Not sure how I missed GupShup, but it will be on heavy rotation from now on. The service is impeccable and the menu creative, modern and full of flavor. The tandoori cauliflower, salmon tikka and butter paneer masala were just a few of our favorites and we can’t wait to go back to try more from their menu. The cocktails don’t disappoint either.

Jeffrey's Grocery

This place has been one I have visited frequently over the years because it’s consistently great, non fussy but delicious food with great ambience, playlist and staff. If there’s one thing you have to try on the menu it’s the crab, cauliflower and jalapeño dip with ritz crackers. It’s insane. Located on Waverly Place in the West Village

La Esquina

Another favorite that never falls out of favor and feeds my Mexican food cravings, La Esquina may not look like somewhere you would head for dinner. Once you get inside, there’s an elevator that takes you down to the basement where the bar and restaurant are. The food is incredible, full of flavor and their tequila offering is extensive. Located on Kenmare Street, Downtown.
Ci Siamo
I’ve been a big fan of Vic’s restaurant in the Bowery District and once met the chef, Hilary Sterling to congratulate her on her killer caci e Pepe. I was excited to hear that she’d partnered in a new restaurant, Ci Siamo and I had to try it. While the location might be a little bit random, it is well worth the trek. The pasta dishes are light and delicious and  the cast iron focaccia is a must. Located in the Manhattan West Plaza.

Bedford Cheese Shop

There’s something nostalgic for me about cheese shops. I love the idea that they still have relevance even though we all visit grocery stores weekly. Going to your local cheese shop isn’t just about buying some cheese, it’s about interacting with the cheese mongers and learning about the different varieties, while oftentimes trying samples. It’s interactive and fun and that’s what shopping should be. Bedford Cheese Shop is up there as one of my favorites and has everything you could possibly want, from the cheese itself to artisanal crackers, breads, spreads, meats and more. They also make great sandwiches to eat in or to-go. Located on Irving Place in Gramercy Park.

To say the food is never dull here in the city is an understatement, and I love discovering new spots and dishes. Would love to hear any of your favorites in the city too!

Sending lots of love,

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/the-february-edit 2024-02-17T21:35:10-08:00 2024-02-18T06:01:38-08:00 The February Edit Caroline Diani With spring right around the corner and color pops starting to appear in the stores, I'm thinking of the things that can help get us in the mood and ready for the shift. Whether it's styling your wardrobe, or throughout your home, there's something for everyone to dip a toe in the season to come. And Easter is just over a month away too...

A great way to get in sync with spring is to think of the colors that appear in nature. I’ve been finding some really beautiful sweaters lately that come in flattering colors that add just the right amount of pop to an outfit. A few of my favorites are the cashmere Imogen Jumper in Freesia, the Tova Sweater in ivory, the Australie Pullover in rose, and the Rib Mock Neck Sweater in moss. To layer on a lightweight coat, a netural grey is very versatile and I love the tried and true Mai Wrap style. For a lightweight nylon jacket, the Reversible Classic from Herno in light grey and pale blue is easy to style with color. A trouser style jean is good for many looks, whether casual or dressy and I’m liking the Mitchell Jean from Nili Lotan — the Queen of the best pant and jean fits. I also love the Shon Pant she makes in our new color, midnight blue. It’s always a good idea to have a dress that evokes the lighter, breezier days of spring, and Easter celebrations, and this Volga Dress is perfect. It can be worn as an off-the-shoulder dress or with the shoulders covered. It’s a real beauty.

For accessories, there are so many ways to bring in color or a lighter version of what you’ve had on repeat all winter. For starters the V-Star Sneakers in red are an easy pop if your go-to outfits are black or darker shades. And they’ll look great with white in the summer. Another idea with the same versatility is the Jerry Loafer in a soft creamy leather and durable rubber sole. Jewelry can brighten wintery shades and add color. The Silia Earrings just arrived with striking ammonite and yellow calcite stones in a gold plated setting. I also love the stamped gold plated Wide Bangle which gives a nod to summers in Greece. Looking for something more delicate? I love the Moss Aquamarine Stone Cuff from Mary MacGill. The whisper weight cashmere Zephyr Scarf is perfect for year round but especially when you’re ready to ditch your heavier scarves. And for some cheery color, I love the Jala Scarf. Sunglasses will need dusting off and if you’re ready for something new, the MP-2 is a shape that suits all faces and all occasions. And, lastly, when you’re ready to give the knee high or shearling lined boots a break, a new Chelsea Boot has us all drooling. It’s the perfect leather, toe shape and heel height and is built to wear on repeat.

At home, there’s opportunity at every corner to shed a little light and celebrate the anticipation of a new season. And with Easter just over a month away, these cute little Bunny Statues are sure to raise a smile. Add them to place settings or on a shelf or a mantle, or even tucked under a plant in the garden. Floral scents evoke the shift into spring and the Madurai Candle from Trudon have intoxicating notes of jasmine and ylang ylang. Cream Rope Twist Candles for the dinner table are a classic and pair well with our Misty Rose Stone Jug napkins. Set your plates on these round Fringe Placemats for some spring-like texture. Give that outdoor furniture a wipe and add our beautiful eastlankaa x Tensira Tufted Chair Cushions and matching Round Table Cloth (we also have rectangular). For those of you who like to eat in season produce, Six Seasons is a great cookbook to inspire dishes that utilize what’s on hand for the season you’re in. And if salads are your thing, this gorgeous Spalted Maple Oval bowl is perfection for serving.

I'm gearing up for a buying trip to New York and Paris and by the time I get back, I'm going to be more than ready for all things spring, so, if you're anything like me, I'm already planning and prepping for warmer, drier days ahead. Happy February, friends!

Sending lots of love,

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/connecting-the-senses 2024-02-11T01:05:58-08:00 2024-02-11T10:06:23-08:00 Connecting The Senses Caroline Diani This week has been extra special at eastlankaa. Not only was it the kick off to the Wien International Film Festival with our neighbors at the Arlington Theater, but we've also had three days of Valentine's Day inspired Pop Ups. And it has reminded me of the power of community: how wonderful it feels to be amongst so many incredible women, and to support each other in beautiful ways. I thought I'd share something of these women here, what they do and how much fun we've all had hanging out...

We were lucky to have several locally owned businesses host pop ups in each of our stores, many of them female founded and customers of ours! So, I'd like to shine a spotlight on them here in case you haven't discovered any of these great brands.

Citizens of Humanity is a Los Angeles-based premium denim label that has captivated the world with a devoted commitment to producing the highest quality denim in Los Angeles, without compromise. Since 2003, their designers have been traveling the world sourcing superior fabrications and seeking inspiration in every corner of the finest vintage markets. Their team continues to build a powerful women’s assortment that speaks to the core of their brand values: impeccable fits crafted in authentic fabrications and washes, providing women with the utmost comfort and confidence. Each season, Citizens of Humanity delivers a uniform of wardrobe classics that have been modernized for today. They are committed to reducing their global footprint on the environment and over the years have invested in advanced technology including laser methods, ecological stones, ozone wash machines, as well as a new recycled water system.

Also, although Citizens of Humanity is a California based brand, they are dedicated to seeking inspiration from individuals around the globe and aiding those doing their part to make a difference. In their words, “more than ever before, humanity needs humanity and we have learned that even just a little effort can make a big impact.”

Ten years ago, Rod Cegleski, a California surfer met Hamish "Hammer" Marshall, an Australian cowboy. A friendship blossomed over a shared love of quality spirits and the Central coast. The two founded Rod & Hammer's SLO Stills to share their passion with friends and family. In the heart of California's Central coast, they handcraft whiskey cut with purified pacific ocean water to capture the soul and essence of the waters that united these two partners from Australia and California. And I have to mention, Jill Marshall, Hamish's wife who has been a customer for as long as I can remember, introduced Jeffrey and me to their whiskey. Whiskey has never been my drink of choice until I tried theirs. I have been converted!

Those who know me know my love affair with chocolate. So it was only natural that I would fall for Wien based, Twenty-Four Blackbirds Chocolates. And with the chillier weather during our event this week, we decided to serve their divine spicy hot chocolate. Founder, Mike Orlando is inspired by traditional chocolate making techniques, and endeavors to make artisanal confections that are truly hand-crafted. He sources raw, un-roasted cocoa beans from single origin estates, growing co-ops, and plantations, and then hand sorts to remove any beans that are flawed or otherwise do not meet their strict standards of quality. He then develops roast profiles to accentuate the subtle, and often delicate, flavor characteristics inherent in beans from each origin. The ingredients are then refined in a traditional stone melangeur, tempered, and molded by hand in small batches with no emulsifiers or additives.

Mary and Lucy Firestone, who we’re lucky to call our customers, created a fragrance line called, Wild Precious Life. “The First”, their original scent is a reminder that fragrance can awaken the spirit, stir the soul, and help women tap into their inner guide.

Combining Mary’s academic background in psychology, with Lucy’s film background in historical storytelling, the Firestone sisters have created a powerful layered experience that stands to change fragrance from something that one simply applies to their skin, to something that allows one’s spirit to breathe. Mary and Lucy have meticulously curated an intimate and autobiographical olfactory experience; they have bottled salient moments from their own journey with the pure intention of helping other women embark on their own… their own wild, precious life. And it doesn’t hurt that their fragrance was given a shoutout by singer-songwriter, Lana Del Ray, who unbeknown to them, is a die-hard fan.

Founded by another one of our lovely customers, Monica Epstein's Ysidro is a clean, refreshing, and sophisticated alcoholic spritz made with the finest super-premium sake. The ruby red fruit, tart acidity, and a touch of salinity are anchored by the mellow brilliance of top-shelf Junmai Ginjo sake to create a drink that is supremely balanced, bright, complex and delicious.

Monica and her husband, Seth, and their fellow co-founders, live just a few blocks from each other off San Ysidro road, which runs through the heart of Montecito and connects the mountains to the sea. This road was the original inspiration behind the name along with Saint Ysidro, the patron saint of farmers, gardeners, and workers. They like to think of him as an early adopter of work/life balance — he embraced simple living and valued being present to “what is” over the stresses and preoccupations of daily life.

Caddis is the anti anti-aging brand of eyewear - cool readers specifically. To quote the founders, “we want to have an open and frank conversation with you about how absolutely right on it is to be the age we are, right here and now. CADDIS is calling bullshit on 50 is the new 40, on the whole fountain of youth illusion, on the many industries that are profiting on vanity and fear of age, on the concept of 'aging gracefully' and on the notion of raging against the dying of the light. Now is what we got, and now is pretty awesome.” I just ordered a few more styles to add to my ever growing collection of their readers.

In addition to all of the amazing partners in this event, we also supported the local non-profit organization AHA! by donating a portion of our sales to them.

AHA! equips teenagers, educators, and parents with social and emotional intelligence to dismantle apathy, prevent despair, and interrupt hate-based behavior. Their programs serve middle school, junior high, and high school students, parents/guardians/adults at home, educators, and the broader community. Participants forge rewarding and supportive relationships while developing social-emotional knowledge and skills. High school students earn community service hours toward graduation or monetary stipends, reflecting the value of social-emotional skill building in preparing them for college and work. Most out-of-school programming is offered by donation. In-school programs are funded largely through grants, donations, and fundraising events, with some investment from local schools and districts. In the program coordinator's words, "our youth are in emotional crisis. Research continues to demonstrate the unmatched importance of social-emotional learning (SEL) in reducing emotional/physical violence in schools by building healthy campus climates with young people taking on the role of change agents in this shift." eastlankaa team members, Cynthia and Shayne are alumnae of this incredible program.

Photo above - eastlankaa team members and AHA alum, Cynthia and Shayne with Senior Director of Development at AHA, Molly Green. We will continue our giving back through the end of today, Sunday, February 11th, so if you shop in any of our stores or online, your purchase will count towards a donation to AHA!.

Thank you so much to all the businesses and founders who participated in our Valentine's celebration, and to our very own team who helped pull it all together so beautifully. Thank you Meg Sandu, an OG eastlankaa team member, for the beautiful photos taken during our event. And, our amazingly generous customers who showed up, shared stories, laughs, shopped and helped us give back to AHA!

Sending lots of love to you all and a special Valentine's Day/Galentine's Day this week.

Whether you want to let someone you love know how much they mean to you, or give yourself some extra TLC with a treat, we’ve been having a lot of fun gathering some new goodies that cover it all. So, I thought I’d round up my favorites for you here in this week's journal entry...

Zen Master, Thich Nhat Hanh brings his signature clarity, compassion, and humor to the question of how to love. With offerings on children and family, being in love, physical intimacy, crushes, and much more, How to Love includes meditations you can do alone or with your partner to expand your own capacity to love. The book includes sumi ink drawings by Jason DeAntonis.

Show your heart by decorating a table, door, or fill a bowl with these sweet galvanized metal hearts ready for hanging by a rope loop.

A bestseller and one of my favorites, the Cashmere fragrance candle by Linnea is handcrafted with natural biodegradable soy wax and therapeutic grade essential oils. This fragrance has notes of chamomile, amber woods and patchouli.

An exciting new addition to the store, Trudon is the creme de la creme of fragranced candles. Established in 1643 and a favorite of royalty, each candle is poured into handcrafted glass in Tuscany inspired by the shape of champagne buckets. Paying homage to Marie Antoinette, the Tuileries candle has head notes of pink berry, blackcurrant and mandarin, heart notes of white flowers, raspberry, geranium and rose, and base notes of musk, patchouli, sandalwood and vanilla.

A pretty little trio of diamonds set in 14 carat yellow gold, these petite earrings made by Adina Reyter are perfect for everyday and give a lot of sparkle.

Inspired by ancient rudimentary designs, gold wire is hammered, then knotted to form a simple, organic ring that is both understated and elegant. Handmade in Upstate NY by Mary MacGill.

This beautiful botanical paperweight showcases a perfectly preserved dandelion head. Each specimen is hand-picked in England before being dried and later encased in a sphere. A perfect gift for lovers of the garden.

And when it comes to gardens, flowers are our first love. And what better way celebrate that love than with the Botanical Wonder Bar. It is a decadent, 72% dark chocolate bar infused with blonde orange and elderflower, and is pressed into a flower mold, and scattered with beautiful organic rose petals and delicious toffee. The ultimate botanical dark chocolate treat for yourself or the ones you love.

Celebrate a Valentine’s lunch or dinner using my napkins from The Stone Jug Collection. The Misty Rose is a bestselling color and just restocked in time for the season. The mid weight linen is pre-washed to give a soft handle to the touch.

You can elevate your special table setting with these chic, hand poured twisted rope style tapered candles. Lovingly made from 100% pure North American beeswax in Upstate New York, they never fail to add romance.

Curated by Susanne Kaufmann, the Alpine Bath and Body Collection features a trio of products, inspired by Austrian spa traditions for a true holistic ritual and deep well-being. Included in the set is the Mountain Pine Bath, an aromatic bath soak developed to soothe the senses, the Arnica Body Oil to leave your skin nourished and silky smooth, and the Body Butter for luxurious and intense hydration to finish your at-home spa moment.

Bath bombs your thing? Lose yourself in the Secret Garden with gentle notes of organic patchouli, lavender and geranium. Listen to the gentle fizz as the bath bomb fills your tub with skin nourishing goodness. Organic coconut oil soothes and moisturizes the skin while mineral salts relax your muscles.

These Florentine frames are one-of-a-kind and handcrafted in Florence, Italy with gold and silver leaf, and painted details. Each frame is unique and the perfect way to display a photograph of a treasured memory as unique as the frame itself.

The Brass Stud frame is crafted from ethically sourced bone in a natural ivory color. Each frame is inlaid with gold patina brass studs to add a rich textural finish.

There's still 10 days left until Valentine's Day, so plenty of time to find some goodies to gift or treat yourself to. And I hope my list of some of my favorites helps you along the way. We also have greeting cards (link here) and can easily write your message to include with any gifts shipped. We're here to make things easy, always!

Sending lots of love,

Local to Wien? We're having an extra special 3 day event at our stores with gifts, tastings, pop up shops, giving back and more. Bring your friends, partner, fur babies. We hope to see you there!

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/middling 2024-01-27T22:16:40-08:00 2024-02-01T12:42:14-08:00 Middling Caroline Diani I just joined the 50’s club this week, and am feeling surprisingly excited about this milestone. Like people say, I do think that it’s a privilege to age, especially since my parents passed away close to 50. I don’t take any year for granted and am calling on you, my friends of eastlankaa who are 50 and beyond to share what you like about aging. I think as women in a society that can be unnecessarily focused on youth, it’s good to hear how wonderful middle age can look and feel…

For as long as I can remember, 50 seemed to me to mean old age, over the hill, close to retired, less active, and a lot of things that include the word, “less”. It also seemed to me to be an age of wisdom, and of having it all together. Here’s what I actually know to be true in my experience so far - I don’t feel old, over the hill, close to retired, less active. I actually feel like I know my body and mind better than ever and what it needs to feel healthy. I love being active, moving my body and using my brain, and am in tune with when I’m out of balance and what can bring me back to center. I know that there are people in my life that I can’t be without and there are those that I’ve realized aren’t meant to be in it. I trust my instincts more than ever and I believe that I can do whatever I set my mind to.

I also don’t feel like I have all the answers, and know that I don’t have to. I like listening more than talking, I judge myself less harshly than I used to and also know that that is a work in progress. I trust the universe and the plan that it has. I like to live in flow rather than fighting against it. The wealth of memories I have from my life and all that’s happened, good and bad, comfort me and make me feel proud and grateful. Those memories act as a guide and a reminder that ultimately everything is going to be ok. Having lived a while, I’ve weathered quite a few storms, and yes, they make me stronger, but they also make me softer, more compassionate towards others, and what they might be going through.

And ultimately, I don’t have to have a plan from here on. I’m content knowing that the tools I have collected in my backpack so far will help me in anyway I need help, and carve the path that I’m meant to be on.

I always welcome comments, but I would truly LOVE to hear any comments about what you’ve learned in your life, and what reaching this milestone meant to you. You can add comments below (you have to log in first).  Like I said at the beginning, I think sharing can really help remind each other what a privilege aging is and how wonderful it can look and feel.

Sending lots of love,

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/carolines-winter-sale-edit 2024-01-21T00:13:48-08:00 2024-01-21T00:26:24-08:00 Caroline's Winter Sale Edit Caroline Diani It’s been a minute since I did a monthly Edit, and with our Winter Sale Event going on, this is the perfect time to shine a light on that. I’ve been falling in love all over again with so many classics that have been rounded up in the sale - There are really great pieces that are either already in my wardrobe and well loved, or on my wishlist. These styles may only be available in a couple of sizes, but it’s well worth hunting through to find some treasures. So for this Edit, I’m sharing what I’m loving on sale in both clothing and shoes...

With the weather across the country behaving, let’s face it, as it should this time of year, we’re pulling out all the stops with layers to stay warm. And in our Winter Sale, we have some killer deals on the perfect cool weather pieces to elevate your winter style game.

Enter the Woori Jacket - a two-in-one with it’s reversible feature. Made of shearling and patchwork suede, this jacket hits at the perfect spot on the waist and has just the right amount of fullness for a subtle swing shape. Layer it with the Courtney Sweater with a playful yet classic stripe that makes this hero knit great for year round. Another great classic knit is the New Serafini which can be worn alone or is a lightweight night cashmere to layer under the Collarless Double Breasted Blazer or Not A Double Breasted Blazer. Both blazers from Smythe are cut with a lower length and looser on the hips. Throw on a scarf like my favorite one on sale by Isabel Marant and you’re set.

Looking for a more casual layer? The Harveli Coat is a plaid felted shirt jacket style that is warm, and has an oversized cut so it's ideal for layering knitwear underneath. Alternately, layer the Flat Sleeve Shirt under, unbuttoned, with a tee. This shirt has a lovely weight and cut. I had to throw in the Bambi Blouse to my favorites list because it’s such a versatile top. You can wear it with the ties loose or bowed at the neck for two different looks, and style with everything from jeans, pants, long mid skirts, and culottes with boots. It’s one of those blouses that gets great feedback from those who’ve bought it.

Lastly, the Camille Bow Dress is the ultimate black dress that will serve you well. Made in rich velvet with a pretty bow trio down the front, the long sleeves and midi length offer everything that’s flattering for all body types.

I have so much fun buying accessories because I know how big a role they play in everyone’s wardrobes. When you get your accessories right, they pull a whole look together. For those vertically challenged (I’m 5’ 5”), I love a heel, and I love a wedge even more. A shearling wedge boot and I’m in heaven. The Totam Wedge is warm, stylish and one of those boots that you need to try on to see just how great and versatile they are. I can’t say enough good things about these boots. Pair with the Paul Lune shoulder bag in a beautiful taupe tone with stitching color pops. This bag has a zipper so all your goodies are securely stored.

If you’re looking for a classic Chelsea boot style, the Wild Boots are just that, and come in a great, dark chocolate suede color. Is your wardrobe needing puddle and snow proof boots? The Balbi Boots are shearling lined, making them very warm and cozy, and the camel color, and sleek styling, make these boots more than just functional -- they’re chic too.

A great everyday bag that can be styled a couple of ways is the Jerry Mini. It has a detachable fringe trim so on your boho, Western vibe days, keep the fringe on, and for your more classic and clean outfits, unsnap the fringe. One of my favorite parts of this bag is the turquoise stone detailing. For a useful jean belt that’s got just the right amount of rock ’n’ roll, I love the Civan Belt. The tan leather is a great neutral, and the silver studding trim packs a style punch.

A kitten heel is an essential in everyone’s wardrobe and these Clarita Architectural heels in a subtle golden lamé are easy to style for day or night, casual or dressy. Lastly, I had to throw in these Jazmin Sandals, even though we’re not in the warmer months yet. I love the elevated satin, animal print on an espadrille base. These slides are easy to throw on with anything, and they’re comfortable too.

These are just some of my favorite pieces, and if you haven't checked out our Winter Sale Event yet, there are so many goodies to explore with 30-80% off. If you're looking for anything specific, or need styling advice, feel free to email me at [email protected]. To see all sale, click here.

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/a-belly-warming-winter-soup-to-try 2024-01-13T20:13:55-08:00 2024-01-13T20:15:45-08:00 A Belly Warming Winter Soup To Try Caroline Diani

It seems at the moment, wherever you live, you're probably battling the chill and trying to stay warm. And comfort food might be top of mind to end the day. Since New Year, we’ve also been battling our expanding waistlines here at the farm, so we've been eating lots of stews and soups. I was looking for a new recipe to try this weekend, and turned to our new book, Big Heart Little Stove by Erin French for inspiration…

Ever since discovering Erin French and her restaurant, The Lost Kitchen on a trip to Maine last summer, I’ve been diving into her creative cuisine and beautiful use of edible flowers and interesting flavor profiles. She has recently launched her new cookbook, Big Heart Little Stove and I thought I’d try her Toasted Coriander and Carrot Soup.

The ingredients are very simple and you probably have most of them, if not all on hand. You start by toasting coriander seeds in hot olive oil and add in onion, garlic, salt and pepper. Once that’s all cooked down, you add in your chopped carrots, butter and brown sugar (I used light brown) and cook until the butter is melted. The recipe suggests chicken stock, but I subbed with vegetarian "chicken" stock. Once the stock is added, bring to a simmer, cook until the carrots are tender, and then transfer the soup into a blender.

Blend until smooth and then transfer back into the pot. Erin suggests pouring the soup through a strainer, but I forgot to do that (and in my opinion, it turned out really smooth and even in consistency). Add more salt and pepper if desired.

This is where the recipe gets really fun and full of flavor. Once you’ve served the soup in a bowl, drizzle honey over the soup (you can get creative with a design). I used our dark maple syrup which has a really rich, not so sweet flavor. Then drizzle over plain yogurt (you can sub with a plain non dairy yogurt) and then sprinkle sunflower seeds. Erin suggests cilantro and keeping any bolted flowers from their stems to add. I added chopped cilantro but didn’t have their flowers, so added some edible cornflower and chamomile flowers instead. They were not only delicious but a pretty and colorful garnish too.

The ingredients made enough for a few days worth of meals, so a great take-to-work lunch or light dinner. If you end up trying it, let me know what you think and how you garnished yours!

Stay warm out there, friends...

Sending lots of love,

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/the-better-half 2024-01-06T18:41:14-08:00 2024-01-06T18:41:14-08:00 The Better Half Caroline Diani When I look back on 2023, not only am I looking back on a year, but I’m looking back on my last year of being in my 40s. The first half of my life is behind me (god willing I have 50 more!). And what a difference a couple of years make, because I remember feeling dread about turning 50. But, as my 50th approaches later this month, I’m excited and feel very lucky that I’ve come this far and accomplished many of my dreams…

I’m more comfortable with the idea that I don’t have to have all the answers and that two contradicting ideas can be true. I can feel the haste of time and also slow down to enjoy the sweet moments that each day offers. I can have spells of anxiety that things aren’t lining up exactly how I want them to and also feel like I’m in perfect flow with the universe. I know I’ve achieved a lot in my life and that there’s a lot more I’d like to do, but I feel in equal measure that I don’t have to prove anything more to myself or anyone else.

I’m proud of reaching mid life and also feel a sense of something that’s hard to describe… it’s not angst, but I am approaching the ages that my parents were when they passed away. I'm right at the crossroads of where they left the earth and where I feel my new beginnings are. They’ve been out of my life longer than they’ve been in it and that never stops feeling like a huge loss. But with that loss, it’s taught me to chase those dreams as soon as I have the impulse, because, tomorrow is never guaranteed.

A quote from the late actor, Heath Ledger - "Everyone you meet always asks you if you have a career, are married, or own a house as if life was some kind of grocery list. But no one ever asks you if you’re happy".

On any given day, I would say I’m happy, but I know that I can find a deeper happiness if I keep exploring what that means to me. And for me, the pursuit of deep, authentic happiness is a pretty noble pursuit for the better half.

As I write this, the fire is going and it’s just started to snow outside. The first storm of the new year. Tomorrow when I wake up, it’s going to be a winter wonderland outside. I’m very happy about that.

Sending lots of love to you all,

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/carolines-farmhouse-update-4 2023-12-30T20:37:07-08:00 2023-12-31T06:16:28-08:00 Caroline's Farmhouse Update Caroline Diani I’m wrapping up 2023 with Jeffrey at the farm and thought I’d share a few little updates to this sweet place. It’s pretty moody this time of year - short days, damp walks, cozy fires and lots of carbs! A nice breather after the hustle of one of our busiest times of year. One of the projects that Jeffrey worked on whilst I’ve been in Wien was the living room walls. We took the plunge after years of deliberating and plastered them dark, dark blue…

For there being lots of doors and windows in the house, the living room is on the dark side. What I’ve learned by trial and error with design projects over the years, that leaning into a dark room with darker wall tones can actually make it cozier rather than trying to artificially brighten the room with light walls. I’ve used “Railings” by Farrow & Ball several times before in various applications including our front door here which leads into the living room, and it felt like a good way to go on the walls. They describe it as a soft black with blue undertones which is pretty accurate.

Earlier this year, we hung a hand painted cherry blossom design wallpaper by de Gournay in the powder room/bathroom off the living room which has dark blue blossoms in the palette. Along with some of our furniture in the living room having blue tones, it started making sense to tie it all together.

Late this year, we also completely removed all the drywall that was covering the original 1752 stone wall that’s part of the living room. This endeavor revealed some really cool, rich texture and highlighted more of the historical character of the house.

And this time of year, we love decorating for the holidays. Whether we’re simply lighting the fire and listening to records, putting up Christmas trees or placing paper bag lanterns along our pathway, it all adds to the magic of The Stone Jug - our little slice of heaven.

Wherever this finds you, from myself and the whole eastlankaa team, thank you for all your support this year. We've had so much fun sharing what we love to do with you. We wish you a very Happy New Year and lots of love and good health in 2024.

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/introducing-the-stone-jug-milk-cookie-plate-set 2023-12-16T22:10:38-08:00 2023-12-17T05:18:03-08:00 Introducing The Stone Jug Milk + Cookie Plate Set Caroline Diani From a young age, I remember the magic of believing that Santa was going to come down the chimney on Christmas Eve to deliver the gifts that were on our list. And I felt like the least I could do in return was leave him a snack to keep him going on his long journey. With these fond memories in mind, in collaboration with Handmade Studio, I designed our Stone Jug Milk + Cookie Plate Set. And although ideal for this time of year, this set is intended to be used and loved year round whether you’re a little believer or a big kid at heart.

The handmade set includes a plate with the word “cookies” imprinted around the curve, as well as a lace pattern impression to add texture. The jug has a petite handle, spout for easy pouring and the word “milk” imprinted and the same lace pattern. Both pieces are glazed in a satin finish in a greige color that works well paired with any other colors.
Perfect companions to the set are the eastlankaa Cookie Box and Rebecca Firth's The Cookie Book which features over 75 recipes from basic to more complex, appealing to both the new and seasoned baker.
All you need to add are the cookies, milk, a cozy fire and festive music. Before bed, don't forget to put out the fire so Santa can make his way down the chimney safely!

On this week before Christmas, I hope this finds you in a place where you can pause for a moment to reminisce over some festive childhood rituals that sparked exuberant joy and excitement.

Sending lots of love,

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/getting-creative-with-cheese-plates 2023-12-09T22:14:22-08:00 2023-12-10T07:03:01-08:00 Getting Creative With Cheese Plates Caroline Diani I try not to eat much cheese, but find it too hard to resist during the holiday season. It’s a decadent and fun indulgence when sipping on a cocktail or glass of wine. And, thanks to The Cheese Board Deck book by Meg Quinn, I’ve been learning that there are an array of ways to curb how much of the naughty stuff I eat by adding in colorful fruits, nuts and veggies. So, if like me you enjoy getting your creative juices flowing, here are some easy tips for assembling a dynamic and enticing cheese board…

Since introducing The Cheese Deck book, we’ve sold hundreds of copies, and once you familiarize yourself with the cards, it’s easy to see why. With 50 creative layout designs to try, there’s no shortage of inspiration. And they cover ingredients for every palette, from meat lovers to cookie monsters.

Expert food stylist, Meg Quinn guides you through the process of building your own board with strategic placement of certain food elements, flow, layering and encourages you not to be afraid of covering your board or dish with variety and color.

The book makes a great gift by itself and is also a great companion to our wood boards, handmade ceramic cheese plates, knives, napkins, serving bowls and more. Some of my favorites are included here.

Displaying in the round is another option and works especially well with bunches of color rich fruit, which, as I mentioned earlier, becomes a healthy distraction from eating too many crackers or cheese.

If cheese is not your thing, the deck also covers designing and building dessert and candy boards, so this is a great gift for the sweet tooth too... which has me thinking - maybe I need to try a chocolate board filled with all of my favorites! Will report back if I get photos before I devour it.

Sending lots of love,

https://eastlankaa.com/blogs/blogs/carolines-winter-coat-edit 2023-12-02T20:40:17-08:00 2023-12-04T13:36:39-08:00 Caroline's Winter Coat Edit Caroline Diani I’ve spent a good amount of time on both the East and West coast this fall, and now that December has hit, wherever we are, it seems like coats are definitely in order. Some days call for something light for layering, and some more heavy duty for cooler temps. We also have parties on the calendar, so for this week’s post, I thought I’d give a roundup of some versatile jackets and coats that can pack a style punch as well as a functional one.

For a long silhouette in a color that’s versatile whilst not being black, the Mai Coat is my favorite. I’m not tall (5’5”), but feel that I can pull off the length and the wide collar. It feels like butter and can be worn with jeans and a tee or over a cocktail dress and every daytime look in between. It’s what I would call a wardrobe hero. Here I’ve styled it with a turtleneck sweater and yummy merino leggings, and a pair of suede kitten heeled boots.

When your mood can’t decide, how about a reversible jacket - a cool combo of shearling on one side, and suede patchwork on the other. This jacket may be short, but it’s very warm. It’s also not bulky which makes it a great jacket to throw on and off depending on the weather. I’m styling it with a pair of boyfriend jeans and similar here (sized down, cause baggy is a bit tricky for me to pull off), a tonal turtleneck, similar here, here, and here and my new favorite loafers. They are incredibly comfortable and give me at least another inch in height, which I love!

For those who live in climates that don’t get very cold often, a good everyday jacket is this one. It’s cut oversized - think your husband/partner’s blazer but with a feminine feel. It has a subtle plaid and I love that it’s not black but can play well with black. I’ve styled it with boyfriend jeans and loafers again, and threw on a new scarf for a little textural pop. The scarf is from a new designer to us, Begg + Co, and is made in bonny Scotland. Look out for it coming online soon, along with some great knitwear.

I believe that every wardrobe needs a camel car coat. It’s a timeless classic that goes the distance. What I love about this one is that it’s a little playful, not too serious, and feels like a blanket. I’m wearing it with a cashmere crew from Madeleine Thompson that I just pulled out of the box (coming online soon), the yummy merino leggings, and Chelsea boots that I wear on repeat this time of year.

I personally haven’t had a biker jacket in my wardrobe for years, but this one has me ready to take the plunge again. Its classic styling and cropped length makes me want to style it with dresses or a long skirt, as I’m wearing here. For women my age and older, it feels like a fresh take on an otherwise youthful jacket. A crisp white shirt tucked in underneath would be pretty or as I've done here, monochrome with a cashmere crew, tights and suede booties.

When a blazer just isn’t going to cut it with the cooler temps, this double breasted jacket does the trick. It’s a thicker weight, and a longer silhouette to cover the booty. I love the color because this stone hue truly goes with every color in your wardrobe and it can play equally well with jeans and pants or long skirts and dresses, and, as I’m showing here, with leggings. A knee high boot would look great as do these kitten heel booties.

If you’re looking for a great shell that you can reach for when running out the door to walk the dog or pack in a weekend bag for outdoor activities, this jacket is super lightweight and rolls up small. It can be worn alone or layered under a heavier coat for extra warmth and the color (they’re calling in military) is easy on all skin tones. Definitely a sportier style for layering with leisurewear, or thrown on with jeans and a sweater.

There you have it, seven jackets/coats that I picked for their style and versatility, whether you’re East Coast or West. And if you’re looking for a week’s worth of outfits, this can help with that too. Feel free to ask me any questions or styling advice at [email protected] , and I included all the pieces that we have online from the looks in the collection below for easy searching. Happy December, friends!

Lots of love,

My bucket is full knowing that I’m part of this journey with you all and know that none of it would be possible without the kindness and support all around. This week I want to write a few lines acknowledging what often goes unsaid.

Grate.ful - Adjective - feeling or showing an appreciation of kindness; thankful.

I’m in constant admiration of our team who, even with family and personal commitments, have a drive to bring their best to their roles at eastlankaa. And, by bringing their very best, are bringing out the best of the vision we have here. The whole team is thoughtful and cares deeply about you, our customers, and each other. Everyone works towards offering the best service they can so that you feel like we’re making your busy lives just a little bit easier.

And for those of you who shop with us online, you are as likely to have your package wrapped by our GM, Leanna, as our Care Assistant, Julie. And during this busy season, my husband, Jeffrey jumps in to help with packaging orders too. We all do whatever it takes to get the task done.

Whether you’ve been on this journey with me since the beginning in 2002, or joined our community along the way, you have shaped eastlankaa and given it a life-force. We all know here that there would be no business without you, and we’re grateful everyday that you give us a place to come to, feel our purpose, and experience the joys of connecting with you and with each other. And, it’s rarely easy in this business, and this year has had its own set of challenges - the flooding of one of our stores at the beginning of the year was probably up there as one of biggest challenges to date. But we got through it as a team, taking care of what we could and trusting all would work out when we couldn’t control some of the circumstances. It was a proud moment for me to see how the team rallied around each other and the business. And to you, our customers, we can’t thank you enough for showing up for us both in stores and online during that time. Every kind word and thoughtful check in, kept our spirits high and helped us get back up and running as soon as we could.

Many of you have known our team for years and some of you perhaps have yet to meet with them. They inspire me everyday to keep working at the vision, tweaking, refining... simply put, they make me better. I love them all and because of that, I love my work even more than I would without them. Leanna, Christine, Cynthia, Jennifer, Ariella, Dominique, Sara, Julie, Penny, Theekshi, Gracie, Shaina, Julia, and all our seasonal helpers, thank you! Thank you for believing in me, sharing your talents and time, and for being kind and generous souls. I couldn't do this without you. I feel very lucky.

And to my husband, Jeffrey, there aren't enough thank yous. He sees it all, which includes the good, bad and ugly. The times behind the scenes where I'm feeling anxious or insecure, overwhelmed and exhausted. He helps out in all ways, handling parts of the business that aren't always exciting or necessarily what he planned on doing on any given day. But he does it knowing how much it helps me and the team. He's always the MVP in my book because he's there, ready, willing and able.

I also want to share my appreciation for those who work with us in realms large and small - designers and their reps, graphic artists, content creators, our bookkeeper, Jennifer, our landlord, Robert, local printing shops, advertisers, our neighbors in our Plaza, our delivery drivers, window cleaners, Alexander, our seamstress, Margaret our green thumb and botany creator and anyone else who I'm not thinking of in this moment. Thanks a million to all of you who have made my life more fulfilling than I could have ever imagined or dreamed of it being.

In appreciation,

Gift it with this ceramic Olive Oil Bottle, which is equally beautiful in the kitchen as it is on the table. THE SWEET TOOTH

The sweet tooth in your life will love some of our favorite treats - from luxe chocolates and cakes to cookbooks and kitchen tools. Every year I gift The Cookie Book. It’s filled with delicious recipes from Displaced Housewife founder, Rebecca Firth. Pair it with our bestselling Gold Rimmed Cookie Plate. Our eastlankaa Cookie Box is also a favorite and can be filled with freshly baked cookies. Our favorites are our neighbors, Renaud’s Patisserie who can fill it with an assortment of their delicious cookies (additional charge).

for the baker

A freshly baked treat is one of the best gifts to give and receive, like the Rustichella D’Abruzzo Pandorino Tin. It’s filled with a small loaf of Christmas bread that we suggest topping with warm custard or vanilla gelato. For the biscotti lover, this Antonio Mattei Biscotti Di Prato Holiday Tin is filled with the best light, crunchy baked cookies. The at-home baker will also love Firth’s second book, The Cake Book, and for the kitchen, I love this wooden Honey Spoon and stoneware Farmer’s Pitcher.

Scooping ice cream just got sweeter with The Stone Jug Ice Cream Scoop, handmade in Upstate New York from fallen trees that have been reclaimed and repurposed. Gift it with this pretty handmade ceramic Dessert Bowl. A chocolate delight, this box of handmade organic Mixed Truffles includes flavors such as hazelnut, sea salt and classic. The Laurel & Ash Farm Maple Syrup is a new-found favorite with its dark color and robust taste – perfect for cooking and baking.

THE ORNAMENT EDIT

Ornaments are a holiday gift that will be treasured for years to come, and our store is stocked with an assortment of glittery favorites. Trim the tree with this classic Nutcracker Glass Ornament or opt for this Clear Glass Globe. For the ocean lover, this Baby Octopus Glass Ornament is cute and shimmery, while the vintage-inspired Deer Ornament is festive and fun.

It’s not Christmas without elves, and this Glass Elf Ornament made from blown glass has all the vintage charm. A fun gift topper, the Gray Whale Glass Ornament has tinsel detailing, and this Truck Glass Ornament is a classic, with its snowy tree accent. Gift this Crackled Gold Leaf Glass Ornament for all the festive decorating.

This Crackled Gold Leaf Glass Ornament is also special on the tree or as decor around the home – think garlands and mantels. The bird lover in your life will adore this Hummingbird Glass Ornament, which is mouth blown and hand painted, as well as the Cardinal Ornament with gold glitter accents. Add festive charm to a tree or mantelpiece with the red Stari Ornament.

SWEATER WEATHER

My favorite seasons of the year involve wearing sweaters. Whether you’re shopping for a friend, a family member, a spouse (or yourself), you can’t go wrong with a cozy, warm sweater. A classic stripe, the Gideon Sweater from Nili Lotan is made from a luxuriously soft wool-cashmere blend with a funnel neck and long raglan sleeves. Another oversized favorite, the Ribbed High Neck from Mr. Mittens has a relaxed, yet chic look with a high neck and is made from a cashmere blend.

Elevate her winter wardrobe with the Iris Sweater from Anine Bing. Made from a chunky alpaca blend, this sweater is cut for a loose, relaxed fit. I love to wear it with trousers, denim and skirts. A pop of color and print, the Melange Patchwork Iris Pullover from Raquel Allegra is a much loved sweater. The drop shoulders and slouchy sleeves make it stylish, yet comfortable and the contrasting colors will bring her out of her color rut.

And a must for any sweater wearer, this Sweater Stone. This natural pumice stone makes all your winter favorites last longer, just lay your knit garments flat and brush the stone against in short, smooth movements.

SHINE ON

Give the gift of light with an array of special candles, crystals and paperweights that are sure to brighten up any space. Himalayan Crystals are beautiful gifts to give and receive, and they have the added benefit of clearing negative energy and promoting harmony. This larger one is lovely for bigger spaces, and this smaller pink one has multi-colored chlorite inclusions throughout.

Lighting candles is a year round ritual, but especially as the days become shorter. One of my favorites for the holiday season is the Noel Double Wick Candle. It’s handcrafted in the USA in small batches and the scent is a blend of bay leaf, sugared berries and cedarwood. Bring a festive touch to your home or a friends with this Shimmering Paper Star.

Each Himalayan Crystal is unique, and this smaller one is the perfect gift for a friend. A Heather Paperweight will brighten up any desktop, and this one features a hand-picked heather that is perfectly encased in a resin sphere. The decorative, yet functional Antique Corbel Candle is made from mineral wax inspired by the original corbel in Barcelona’s old Raval district. This Winter Candle will fill any home with that holiday scent we all know and love – think notes of evergreen, mint and vanilla.

A soft touch of light made for winter days, the Silo Taper Hurricane is a lovely gift for any home. Add in this handmade Advent Candle to kick off the holiday season and count down the days of December. The Dandelion Paperweight is handmade in the United Kingdom and is one of my all-time favorite gifts for garden and nature lovers alike. And a slightly larger Himalayan Crystal that is double sided so you can view the beauty from all sides.

STYLISH SLUMBER

Gift her a moment of relaxation with the amazing Alpine Bath & Body Collection from Susanne Kaufmann. It features a trio of products – the Mountain Pine Bath soak, the Arnica Body Oil and her bestselling Body Butter. Slip into the Casablanca Silk Crepe De Chine Pajamas, made from 100% silk with a classic silhouette and relaxed fit - there so stylish, they're not just for the bedroom.

The perfect accent piece for her sofa or bed, this vintage handmade Stripe Grain Sack Cushion is designed by yours truly. And to set the mood, this Salta Classic Candle from Trudon burns notes of peach, lemon and grapefruit for a crisp freshness she will love.

Elevate her evening skincare routine with the Hibiscus Night Cream from Irene Forte. The blend of green pea, hyaluronic acid, hibiscus seed extract and olive oil is proven to reduce wrinkles. A new book for her nightstand, Friends: A Poem For Every Day Of The Year is a joyous read and the perfect gift for family, friends and partners.

Brighten up any space with this Room & Linen Spray, scented with basil, mandarin and kale for a fresh and clean smell that lingers in the air and eliminates odors. And to complete her stylish slumber, the Dalton Throw is woven in Belgium from a linen, cotton blend using traditional weaving techniques.

Cheers to the start of this magical time of year and the joy that gift giving can bring. We all know that it can get overwhelming too, so here's hoping this help make things easier.  As always, we're here to help with any and all holiday shopping needs, so feel free to reach out to us at [email protected].

It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away, and then the holiday celebrations and gatherings really begin. If you’re a hostess this year, I’m sure you’re starting to plan. Depending on the occasion, the table is a focal point that deserves some attention, and I love creating different palettes each year. This week I thought I’d share a few holiday tabletop ideas with all the elements that help bring it all together. All you’ll need to do is add the food and loved ones…

One year I created a dark, moody holiday tabletop for Thanksgiving at the farm in New York. The grey monochromatic color palette was very fitting for the environment and it's one I’ve used again and again. For each place setting, I used the Maya Placemat with the Kinfolk Dinner Plate and Pasta Bowl on top and the Lace Salad Plate on the side.

To balance out the dark color palette, I went with a light-colored linen napkin, like The Stone Jug Linen Napkin in silver, and clear glassware, like the Artois Water Glass. To serve our Thanksgiving Feast, I used a variety of cutting boards, like the Baguette Cutting Board, serving bowls and plates. And for the centerpiece, I incorporated these Antique Brass Candlesticks with the Column Candles on top with a variety of squash and gourds. Even if you’re Thanksgiving is dinner for two, this tabletop is low fuss, yet still elevated and special.

You simply can’t go wrong with a bright, white monochromatic table setting for a holiday gathering. With the right mix of elements, it feels fresh and looks gorgeous. I started with the West Table Runner, then added in natural fibers and textures throughout. For each table setting, I used a Round Fringe Placemat, topped with the Lace Piatra Dinner Plate and Gold Brush Cookie Plate. Then to top it off, I put The Stone Jug Linen Napkin inside our festive Bell Napkin Rings. At each place setting I also included my favorite Crystal Whiskey Glass.

For the centerpiece, I brought in a mix of festive decor and candles for a dreamy glow. I used the Pillar Candle in a Candle Plate and these Brass Vintage Candlesticks topped with the Rope Candles. I also sprinkled in a few of these beautiful Silo Taper Hurricanes, which add a touch of soft light to your table. Understated and elegant, I love the look of the Pina Pro Table Lamp, which offers a bright, clean glow and dimmable feature.

For holiday decor, I mixed these small and tall Snow Trees with these pretty whimsical Tree Snow Globes. This touch of holiday is just enough to feel festive without over doing it. And I love how this can feel like a winter tabletop, as well as a Christmas one – making it very versatile.

If you're looking to host a holiday gathering al fresco, there are many ways to incorporate festive details. I used a balance of both light and dark colors for a fresh, yet seasonally inspired table. I started with this eastlankaa x Tensira Tablecloth, and then for each table setting I used the Chamberlin Platter, layered with a Pasta Bowl and topped with a eastlankaa x Tensira Linen Napkin in safari stripe and a Cane Napkin Ring. For glassware, I went with a mix of light and dark by using the Lyonnais Wine Glass and the Lyonnais Tumbler.

For the centerpiece, I wanted a touch of soft light so I used the Tapered Edge Candlesticks topped with the Twisted Dinner Candles. The candlesticks and the candles come in two sizes, so you can add some dimension. I also brought in a few different cutting boards (like this one and this one) and these Artisan Cheese Knives to serve appetizers, cheese and bread.

November is here, the unofficial start of the holiday season. While we continue to enjoy fall in all its glory, my mind is on Thanksgiving – thinking about the food, the cocktails and designing the table settings (my personal favorite). Lately, I’ve been finding inspiration in the new book, A Year In The French Style by the founders of Antoinette Poisson, a Parisian design team. They share the beautiful rhythm of life in France, from shopping at the local market and antiquing, to cheese making and textile dying. They also include a few classic seasonal French recipes. I couldn’t resist trying the Orange Blossom Crême Brûlée (for holiday research, of course), and I’m happy to say it was delicious…

Vincent Farelly and Jean-Baptiste Martin are the co-founders of Antoinette Poisson, and best known for reviving the savoir faire of, "domino paper" for home decoration and furnishings. As I was paging through their new book, I was inspired by photos of their historic townhouse on the Atlantic coast, and their artistic style and entertaining rooted in French tradition and elegance. And then I stumbled upon their take on crême brûlée, and I had to give it a go. I always thought crême brûlée was a bit tricky and finicky to make, but as it turns out, it's quite simple...

Caroline Shares A Holiday Dessert

In true French fashion, the ingredient list is simple and it’s likely that you have most of the items on hand. You’ll need eggs, sugar, whole milk, heavy cream, brown sugar and a lime. The only ingredient that was bit more complex was orange blossom water, which isn't easy to find, and so don't sweat it if you have to skip that.

You’ll start off by combining the egg yolks and sugar in a large bowl (like this Pinch Everything Bowl) until smooth, then add in the orange blossom water, lime zest, milk and cream and continue stirring. I use these Teak Measuring Spoons for all my baking needs. Once smooth and combined, you can either pour into individual small ramekins or one larger dish (which is what I opted for).

Bake in the oven in a "baine marie" (a roasting dish half-filled with hot water) until just set. They recommend an oven temp of 195 degrees, but I discovered that I needed a slightly higher temperature for mine to set. After letting it cool at room temperature, chill for at least two hours. This is the more time consuming part, so be sure you prep ahead. Before serving, sprinkle with brown sugar and caramelize using a kitchen torch or broil briefly in the oven.

The French do so much so well and this book, A Year In The French Style offers so many unique recipes and interior design ideas that can help inspire changing up the normal go-tos this holiday season.  .

Sending lots of love,

We’ve reached peak fall: the weather has a cool, crispness, boots are back in rotation and I’m lighting candles around my home. This season tends to feel fleeting, so everything I love about fall I’ve brought to the eastlankaa stores for you to enjoy too – from camel-colored wardrobe staples and all the fall boot styles, to seasonal bestsellers for your home. So for the October Edit, I’m rounding up my fall picks for your wardrobe and home...

From coats and handbags, to sweaters and boots, camel is a fall color that's versatile, chic and comes in many different shades. I’m currently loving the Teddy Car Coat from Smythe, with its classic car coat fit that's perfect for layering. Our bestselling Duchess Blazer has a tailored silhouette in that flattering camel hue, and is suitable for wearing from the office to dinner out.

My fall wardrobe isn’t complete without a camel colored sweater. The Oversized V-Neck Pullover from Treat is made from the softest multi blend with a deep v-neck. For a timeless camel cardigan, the Maio Cashmere Cardigan is super cozy that wears well paired with leggings or skinny jeans and ballet flats.

The Flavie Pants are a sleek wool suiting pant with a loose, fluid leg and double front pleats that are great for all body types. The camel color offers a fresh take on a tailored pant that we all know and love in black. For an everyday shoulder bag in that classic fall hue, the Vigo Suede Baguette Bag from Isabel Marant Étoile is all style and ease.

For footwear, I’m loving the Isla Booties from Loeffler Randall. The heel adds just the right amount of height without sacrificing comfort. The go-with-everything sneakers, the V-10 B-Chromefree Sneaker from Veja will add a sporty touch to your outfit. And to keep your feet cozy, the Love Cashmere Crew Socks from Hansel From Basel are made from Italian recycled cashmere and have been on our bestseller list for over a year.

Boots are fall wardrobe essentials, and with countless styles to choose from, the hardest part is picking the perfect pair or few. From ankle to thigh-high, suede to leather, there is a boot for every occasion and preference. The Dicker Boots from Isabel Marant Étoile are an ankle bootie with a western-inspired flair that wears well with jeans and dresses. Alternatively, the Duerto Boots from Isabel Marant Étoile are also western-inspired and hit above the ankle.

For a dressier ankle boot (that’s also great for the holidays), the Deone Boots from Isabel Marant Étoile are a rich suede with a kitten heel – perfect to wear with dresses, skirts and pants. Designed for everyday wear, the 40mm Suede Ankle Boots from Vanessa Bruno have an ankle silhouette with a low heel. Slightly more elevated are the River Engineer Booties from Loeffler Randall. With studded straps and a moto style, these boots can be dressed up or down.

The classic Chelsea gets an upgrade with the Alberone Chelsea Boots from Diemme. Made in Italy and lined with calf leather, these boots have a wedged sole for an edgier look. The Campa Boots from Isabel Marant Étoile have a combat style with front lace-up closure and a treaded rubber sole.

A classic riding boot never goes out of style, and I’m currently loving the 45mm Leather Boots from Vanessa Bruno, which are made from vegetable-tanned leather. Alternatively, the Seenia Boots from Isabel Marant Étoile are made in Portugal from a beautiful cognac leather.

Creating a cozy ambiance in my home is a favorite way to welcome colder weather, and one of the first things that's easy to do is light a  scented candle. The beautiful candles from Trudon are elegant and smell heavenly, like the Cyrnos Classic Candle which features mediterranean aromas of citrus, fig, pine, lavender. For the dining table, I’ve been using these Rope Candles for years and they are still my favorite, and hand poured from pure North American beeswax. And if you're looking for a seasonal scent to bring into your home, the Pumpkin Harvest Candle is a hit every year.

I also love adding soft, warm textures and we just received beautiful new felted wool rugs from the Living Rug Company which are highly coveted at eastlankaa. The Gwyn Rug is 100% cruelty free and vegetarian felted, using just the sheep’s wool. I can't say enough about how wonderful these rugs are for the floor, on a chair, a bench, in front of the fireplace... they're the best.

I’ve been using linen bedding from Cultiver for a few years now and I love it. Linen fabric naturally regulates body temperature, so the sheets and pillowcases can be used year round.

When cool weather comes calling, I layer up on extra cushions and throws. For added seasonal color, this eastlankaa X Tensira Cushion in safari stripe is a favorite that I designed for our collaboration. The fabric is hand-dyed and made with traditional looms using 100% organic cotton. For extra storage space, I use this handwoven reed basket for cushions and throws. It's made using Totora Reed, which grows along the coast and in the high plateaus in Peru. It also makes a great log basket.

Adding seasonal napkins to a table setting is a wonderful way to usher in the fall season. I recently launched my Stone Jug Linen Napkins in a new pumpkin hue, and have loved putting them to good use. I continue to bring fresh greenery and flowers into my home, even in the fall and winter months. This Balloon Vase in smoke is made from mouth blown glass and created in Copenhagen by Louise Roe.

From sweaters and boots, to candles and rugs, the eastlankaa stores are filled with all things fall. This is one of my favorite times of the year, so I'm enjoying every moment – from getting dressed, to decorating my home. I hope my curated collection of fall favorites inspires you this season.

Sending lots of love,

Autumn in the Hudson Valley is a heady display of leaf colors and early morning mist. It’s a magical show that nature puts on and easy to find inspiration at every turn. This time last year, my friend, Gail Bryson came for a visit and we took walks picking fall leaves together. Gail, who is also a designer and worked with me for the last 21 years on various eastlankaa projects (including our branding for my new homeware label, The Stone Jug), took the leaves back to her studio in London and turned them into a pattern that we printed onto linen tea towels. I’m excited to introduce my newest collaboration, and a glimpse into the process of creating The Stone Jug Fall Tea Towel...

The Stone Jug Fall Tea Towel

Fall at our farmhouse brings an abundance of leaves in all shapes, sizes and colors. There is inspiration around every corner, so it's no surprise that a foraging walk around our property quickly turned into a creative project. Gail, Jeffrey and I collected a variety of leaves – from birch, maple and ginkgo, to oak and hornbeam.

The Stone Jug Fall Tea Towel

This country road is a short walk from our house, and this time of year is an absolutely beautiful spot for a fall stroll. The colors are vibrant and there are so many leaf species to identify. After gathering, Gail then dried out and pressed a selection into a magazine, and when she returned to her studio in London, she pressed them for another six months.

The Stone Jug Fall Tea Towel

When the leaves were dry and fully pressed, Gail spread them all out and scanned in her favorite ones – again selecting a good mix of shapes, sizes and species. She kept them life size and played around with composition within the print guidelines and size of the final tea towel. She wanted the leaves to look like they had fallen on the ground as they would in nature.

Gail converted the file for printing and selected the print color. We opted for cranberry red as it fits with fall season and lasts well into the Christmas holidays. It also looks beautiful on the natural linen we were printing on.

Nature has always been a big inspiration for me, but even more so since seeing fall in Upstate New York. This versatile tea towel has become a staple in our kitchen and will continue to be as we head into the holiday season. A big thank you to my friend, Gail for partnering in this project and so many others. I can't wait to see what we come up with next.

Sending lots of love,

I was in Paris earlier this month for Fashion Week and was excited to revisit my favorite spots, and even added some new ones to the list. Paris is one of my favorite cities, one that I’ve visited every year from my late teens, yet still remains just as magical as the first time. I was in Paris earlier this month for Fashion Week and was excited to revisit my favorite spots, and even added some new ones to the list. The inspiration of the city is still fresh in my mind, so I thought I’d put together a guide of where I like to stay, eat, drink, and play in Paris.

The 6th Arrondissement is the area I call home when I’m in Paris. Located in the heart of the Left Bank and filled with small boutiques, historic sites and famed cafés, this is the quintessential Paris neighborhood. It’s home to the Latin Quarter, the beautiful Luxembourg Gardens and the Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the oldest church in Paris. One of my favorite streets is Rue du Buci (shown in photo above), a lively street for walking, late night bars, restaurants and music.

Paris is home to countless museums, but a few made the top of my list during my recent visit. The Galerie Dior is a stunning three-story museum that covers the history of fashion designer, Christian Dior, France’s most legendary maisons de couture. It truly embodies the spirit of Parisian haute couture, while sharing the history, displaying looks and original sketches, and of course featuring hundreds of gowns, many of which are being shown for the first time. You could easily spend an afternoon here, and it's a must for fashion lovers like myself.

An iconic museum that I’ve returned to time and again is Musée Orangerie. It’s most famous for Monet’s eight Water Lilies murals, which are absolutely breathtaking. It also features a large collection of 20th century works by artists like Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and others.

Musée Orangerie

A close walk from where I like to stay and the perfect spot for a picnic lunch is at the Jardin du Luxembourg. These beautiful gardens cover nearly 60 acres and are split into French gardens and English gardens. There is also an orchard, an apiary where you can learn about bee-keeping and greenhouses with a collection of orchids and a rose garden. Paris is home to many parks, and this is one of the most beautiful.

Jardin de Luxembourg

I just missed the opening of the Mark Rothko exhibit at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, which opens on October 18th. This is the first retrospective in France dedicated to Mark Rothko since 1999. It brings together 115 works from the largest international institutional and private collections. The exhibition traces the artist’s entire career, from his earliest figurative paintings to the abstract work that he is known for today. If I could, I would go back just for this exhibit!

I also visited the reconstruction of Notre Dame, which was damaged by a fire in April 2019. The fire engulfed the spire and most of the roof, but thankfully firefighters were able to control the blaze, saving the main structure. No one was injured and the Catholic relics housed in the cathedral and the works of art were rescued and brought to safety. Stadium seating is currently set up at Notre Dame so people can enjoy the front view that was not burned by the fire. Photos of the aftermath of the fire are also on display, as well as a new cultural space underneath the cathedral that explains the restoration project and showcases sculptures that were preserved.

Dining out in Paris always offers the best of cuisine and wine and lively atmosphere. One of my favorite spots is Chez Fernand, located in the heart of Saint Germain des Prés. This dining institution was founded in 1970 with a passion for delicious, fresh French ingredients – I love the French onion soup and sea bass, but I go for the escargot and fresh bread for dipping.

Located in the 6th arrondissement, La Palette is a cafe and brasserie that offers simple fare for a quick bite to eat. It’s one of the iconic cafes in the Latin Quarter, and was once frequented by artists like Cézanne and Picasso, and later by Ernest Hemingway and Jim Morrison. It’s my favorite spot to enjoy a glass of wine and some cheese, while sitting on the large terrace overlooking rue Jacques-Callot.

La Boissonnerie is a popular restaurant and wine bar and a great spot if you’re in the mood for seafood. Loved by locals and visitors alike, and warmly appreciated for their English-speaking staff. The chef uses fresh, seasonal ingredients to create homemade cuisine that’s creative and authentic. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.

There is no shortage of places to shop in Paris and it can feel a bit overwhelming when you don't have a lot of time. After working during the day I like to head over to the famous department store, Bon Marche on rue de Sèvres. It stays open till 8pm and is filled with everything you could ever want. Founded in 1852, it's still as relevant today as it was one hundred and seventy one years ago.
There is inspiration around every turn, and I always leave with my cup filled to the brim. I'd love to hear some of your favorite spots in Paris. Feel free to share with us all here in the comments section below.

Sending lots of love,
